A loft can look full of insulation yet still lose a surprising amount of heat if that insulation is too thin, uneven, compressed or disturbed by stored boxes. For many homes, the aim is simple: keep heat in the rooms below while making the roof space safe and useful for storage. The difficulty is that those two jobs need to work together. What loft insulation depth should you aim for?
For a typical cold loft with mineral wool insulation, current UK guidance commonly points towards a total depth of around 270mm. This is usually made up of insulation fitted between the ceiling joists, then a second layer laid across them to reduce heat loss through the timber.
That figure is a useful starting point, not a rule to apply blindly to every property. Older homes may have thin, patchy insulation that needs upgrading. Newer homes can have different insulation systems and details set out by their builder. The right answer depends on the material already in place, its condition, the construction of the ceiling and whether there are any areas that need to remain clear for ventilation, electrics or access. A proper survey is far more useful than simply measuring one corner of the loft.
Why depth matters
Insulation works by slowing the movement of heat. In a cold loft, warmth rises through the ceiling below and would otherwise escape into the roof space. More insulation generally means less heat loss, but only when it is installed correctly and kept at its intended thickness.

Rigid insulation boards can offer good performance in less depth, but they are not automatically the best answer. They need accurate cutting, careful fitting and attention to gaps. Spray foam is another area where caution is needed. It is not a straightforward replacement for conventional loft insulation and can create concerns around roof ventilation, moisture and future surveys. Check these details before adding more insulation

Electrical cables need thought as well. Cables buried under thick insulation can run warmer than they were designed to. Think about what will actually go up there. Seasonal decorations, luggage and lightweight household items are very different from a full filing cabinet or heavy gym equipment. Keep the heaviest items close to the hatch where possible and avoid overloading any area.
Safe access matters just as much as the floor. A secure loft ladder, a larger insulated hatch and good loft lighting make storage practical rather than frustrating. They also reduce the temptation to balance on joists or move around in poor light, which is where damage to ceilings and insulation often happens.
When should insulation be replaced rather than topped up?
Topping up is usually suitable when existing insulation is dry, clean, evenly laid and still in reasonable condition. If it has been heavily compressed, contaminated by vermin, soaked by a roof leak or disturbed beyond repair, replacement may be the better option.
Deal with leaks and condensation causes first. Fresh insulation will not fix a damaged roof covering, poor ventilation or a plumbing leak. Once the source is resolved, the loft can be insulated and boarded in a way that is built to last.
